Best dressed at the Costume Institute Gala

The Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City always has the best red carpet. Hands down. You might disagree, but we’re pretty sure that no other event features so many celebrities who are dressed by designers who want to make a statement. That translates into taking chances. So Rooney Mara made see-through Givenchy lace look demure, Kirsten Dunst pulled off a full-length Rodarte skirt suit with aplomb, Anna Wintour had a lobster sprawled on her gown and Sarah Jessica Parker sparkled in a full-coverage floral Little House on the Praire-esque Valentino gown.

Speaking of covered up, Rihanna is our pick for best dressed. Though Carey Mulligan’s mirrored Prada is a close second, Rihanna’s downright understated black crocodile dress from Tom Ford’s fall 2012 collection. Sleeves on the red carpet look add some drama. What you can’t see in this photo is the plunging back.

We would have paired it with this Nancy Gonzalez croc clutch. Not that she needs to change a thing, but just in case she wants somewhere to put her lipstick and phone.
