Launched in 1960, the Accutron at the time was the world's first fully electric watch and the most accurate timekeeping mechanism ever devised. They are remarkable watches with a fascinating story - the tuning fork technology was originally developed for NASA because of its accuracy and had to be hidden from the Russians. The Accutron was so accurate that the U.S. government asked Bulova to delay the release of the cutting edge movement for fear the technology may fall into the hands of the Russians. An Accutron watch movement sits on the moon's Sea of Tranquility today, in an instrument placed there in 1969 by Apollo 11 astronauts. Today's offering showcases this striking and slightly exotic Accutron that is near new-old-stock. It has its original Corjam Accutron band and buckle. The previous dealer polished the edge of the caseback so the L of Bulova is light. Except for that the case looks new-old-stock under magnification. A new battery has been installed in the watch.
