Best of the Emmys 2011

There’s nothing I love quite as much as a red carpet, and three trends definitely stood out from the rest at this year’s Emmys: Sparkles, Ravishing Red and Form-Fitting Fishtails. Let’s take a closer look at my absolute favorites of the night!

I am admittedly a sucker for sequins, but I absolutely loved Martha Plimpton in burgundy Zac Posen, Evan Rachel Wood in black Elie Saab and Julie Bowen in a patterned Oscar de la Renta. All three gowns fit like a dream, and none of the women went overboard with accessories — definitely the trick to keeping sequins sophisticated.

For some reason, the red carpet must have been a major inspiration for this awards show — and not all of them did the daring shade right. These three, however, hit a home run for me. Kerry Washington went shimmery and sheer in Zuhair Murad, Sofia Vergara was all curves in Vera Wang and Nina Dobrev was old school movie star in Donna Karan. Nina, for me, won the night by choosing two metallic accents that didn’t compete with each other.

Lastly, three ladies in form-fitting fishtails really pulled off memorable ensembles. Julia Stiles was feminine and flirty in lace Georges Hobeika Couture, Christine Baranski was elegant and sophisticated in Zac Posen and Kelly Osbourne showed off her silhouette in J. Mendel. I like how this look can be interpreted for all sizes and ages: Christine’s cap sleeves and deep-v neckline is just the right amount of skin for a woman of a certain age.

Want to get your own red-carpet worthy look? A clutch from celeb-favorite Judith Leiber always does the trick!

Perfectly Prada

Here’s an unusually casual Rihanna in Italy this week. Although her red hair is pretty hard to ignore, I think it’s her cute ostrich Prada bag that’s the standout. Ostrich is a super durable material that has an inherently chic pattern worked in naturally, and some of my favorite bags right now–in all colors and sizes–are made from it. Whether you’re looking for a similar Prada bag (try this Runway Bauletto Cervo Patch Naturale Satchel on for size) or something in ostrich (see below), it’s good to know that a signature tote can really make the outfit.

Here’s my ostrich faves of the moment:

HERMÈS Saffron Ostrich 35cm Birkin Bag with Gold Hardware. The gold standard of ostrich bags in a warm, neutral color.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA Grey Ostrich Clutch. It’s totally minimal and very chic.

BODHI Genuine Ostrich 13″ Laptop Sleeve. It’s a total splurge, but the acid orange makes carrying your computer around super fun.

Red Carpet Baubles

While I’d love to sit here all day and critique the Emmy gowns from Sunday night’s telecast, sometimes it pays to just stick to one topic to start. How about jewelry?

Although many women wore some serious statement jewels, I think only a few women managed to really incorporate strong jewelry looks into their entire ensembles, so let’s talk a little bit about why.

I am really loving this Grecian/Egyptian inspired Marchesa gown with a gold collar detail. This is a very refined look for Kim, and she managed to not go overboard on her makeup or too tight with her pulled-back hair. Since the neckline itself acts as jewelry, she made the right move by wearing a simple pair of studs and a gorgeous Lorraine Schwartz criss-cross cuff in white and yellow diamonds.

Lea Michele from Glee has been a red carpet standout all year, and her navy blue Oscar de la Renta is no exception. This gown could have turned into an ’80s prom fiasco, but her tousled, beach-ready hair, dark nails and stellar Lorraine Schwartz jewelry really gives the outfit a youthful, fun look. The necklace, in particular, is one of my favorite accessories of the night. Made up of natural colored diamonds, the piece was just the right amount of sparkle without being bling-y.

Talk about getting better with age! Julia Louis-Dreyfuss looks like minimalist perfection in black Narciso Rodriguez with a sheer waist panel. Since she chose black, Julia wisely opted for a pop of color at the ear and wrist. Her Irene Neuwirth earrings and bracelet (in what looks to be chalcedony) stand out without going overboard.

While she got mixed reviews from some, I personally loved Kyra Sedgwick‘s Monique Lhuillier raspberry gown. Soft waves plus a stack of colored gem bracelets from Ofira gives her a hippie goddess vibe that perfectly rides the line between formal and fashion.
