The ABCs of PORTERO – Part 2

N is for Nick Marmol, our Creative Director

Nick Marmol, Creative Director of PORTERO.com

Born in London, Nick is a second-generation antiques specialist; a field the English take very seriously. A lover of historic landmarks and an avid traveler, Nick has been all over the world, but his favorite place to visit is India. Nick enjoys playing tennis and fishing, and his favorite restaurant is The Inn at Pound Ridge, where he enjoys the Maine Lobster pan roasted in the shell with oregano and chili. Although he’s British, he doesn’t drink tea.

Nick’s favorite item on the site is a 1940′s Cartier Lighter Watch, engraved “For each year is just an hour.”

Essential Retro Watches

Think the retro styling a la Mad Men is wearing off? Think again. The latest cover of GQ Australia shows Taylor Lautner carrying off the mid-century vibe beautifully, wearing tailored suits, slicked-back hair and dapper timepieces.

A vintage watch is a great way to embrace the look without an insanely high price tag. Elegant models by Rolex, Omega and Breitling can be found as low as $1,000 – a relative bargain compared to their contemporary counterparts. Plus, the use of simple, stately dials and always-in-style leather bands means that these accessories will stay in your collection forever.

We put together a set of our favorite essential retro watches – featuring a round face and leather straps – for easy shopping. Our pick for best value is Omega, the Swiss brand that is the official timekeeper of the Olympics.

Olympics + Omega

With all of the excitement surrounding the recent Olympic announcements (yay, Rio!) I think it’s only appropriate to report on some related timepiece news.

If you didn’t know, Omega has been affiliated with the Olympics since the 1932 Los Angeles games when it was named ‘official timekeeper.’ Although the brand’s contract extended through the 2012 London games, last week they signed back on through at least 2020. The picture above is from the press conference given at the the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.

And, let’s be honest: Most of us will never score an Olympic medal, but wearing an Omega is a good way to get a little piece of the action, whether gold or silver.
