Apparently gold facials have gone mainstream. Who knew? Equinox spas are now offering signature treatments containing 24-karat gold flakes said to ‘moisturize, hydrate and reduce signs of aging’. I dug around a bit and found that the idea is far from new. Cleopatra herself was said to sleep wearing a gold mask, and ancient Chinese empresses had gold rollers for facial massage.
Gold flakes have been put in consumer products ranging from liquor to paint to desserts–mostly for aesthetic value. But it’s interesting to think about whether it can have a healing effect on the human body. (Totally reserving my judgement on this ridiculous product that might, however, make you laugh.)
I will say that certain gold accessories can automatically put me in a great mood (like this, this and this); maybe that’s enough?
Like many, I was immediately smitten with the sister duo of Laura and Kate Mulleavy (aka Rodarte) as soon as their dreamy dresses started showing up at premieres and on fashion-conscious starlets. This season seems to show their maturity–instead of concentrating on arty dishevelment, the clothes are more structured, using pattern and texture as a way to inject their singular flair.
Whether or not you like the clothes, you can’t deny that the sisters are very into gold for Spring ’11. Besides the clothing palette, they also showed signature gold platforms and the models wore gold lipstick. Interestingly, instead of looking blinged out, the gold took on a bronzy shade that made for a warm, earthy tone. Does this mean that yellow gold is here to stay? Rodarte seems to be on the pulse of American fashion these days, so I wouldn’t be surprised.
Style.com’s Fall Shopping Guide is out, and it is definitely packed with accessories you’ll soon be drooling over. This year’s guide was handpicked by 23 fashion insiders–from models to stylists to editors–and makes you (almost) wish for a chill in the air so you can start indulging.
Luckily, you don’t need to have this season’s full-price products to get the hottest looks. Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite forecasted trends and corresponding pieces available (for less!) on Portero.com:
Gold is the new black. Anna Dello Russo, Fashion Director at Large, Vogue Nippon (above). I couldn’t agree more. Metallics are still huge, and you can’t go wrong with a little glam in your wardrobe. Try the Michael Kors Gold Python Beverly for chic shine.
Off-white for winter. Hanelli Mustaparta, model. Forget what they used to say about white after Labor Day–the old rules are totally played out. This fabulous vintage Chanel camera medallion logo bag will work in the colder months when paired with wools or tweeds.
An oversized necklace. Natalie Massanet, founder, Net-a-Porter. Natalie likes to pair hers with a tailored white shirt, colorful shift dress or an elegant evening gown. You can’t really go wrong with a statement piece like this VRBA lapis and baroque pearl necklace.
It’s another Louis Vuitton for Jessica Simpson! Earlier this week we took a look at her collection of logo luggage, and now she’s rocking a gold Le Fabuleux in Los Angeles. This relatively understated bag is a good look for her–it doesn’t need to scream LV at the world.
I’m a big fan of the Le Fabuleux, and I particularly like our version in white suhali leather. This is a great little summer bag; I like the structured silhouette paired with the gold studs. It’s a little bit business and a little bit rock’n'roll.
