While I wasn’t in love with everything in Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel 2012 Resort show, I did find something that made me personally happy: the jewels! Karl brought on the bling, all from Chanel’s haute jewelry collection, and accessorized everything from turbans to maillots. While the ensemble above may seem impractical to some, it just screamed summer on the Riviera to me (in a great way).
I love the peek of a diamond statement necklace under an outfit totally reminiscent of tennis whites — you can do something similar with a vintage rhinestone necklace for a fraction of the price.
Even the guys didn’t escape the gemstone treatment. OK, so I’m not a proponent of men’s diamond-encrusted turbans, but I think that a certain type of dapper gentleman can easily pull off a pin on the lapel of a sports coat.
Karl himself accessorized with an emerald and diamond pin as tie clip. Really, it’s a pretty minimal look for the designer, who can easily take his own wardrobe way over the top. Be sure to check out our entire selection of vintage jewelry to get the look!

For a while, chandelier earrings were all the rage. And then we were seeing long, straight drops. But the hoop seems to be back and bigger than ever — literally. Take a cue from Jennifer Hudson, above, and go big even during day. Jennifer chose a diamond-studded version for her appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly and I think they add the perfect amount of sparkle to an ensemble with girly touches like pintucks and ruffles.
Oversized might be an understatement for someone like Rihanna, who is never afraid to wear bold accessories. She often chooses major hoops and accentuates them by wearing her hair pulled to one side.
Finally, Olivia Munn wears them with a casual, NYC-street savvy outfit. Her platforms, jeans and t-shirt feel finished with the addition of large silver hoops.
Here’s a great selection of hoops to choose from — whether you want gemstone studded or warm yellow gold. We even have a perfect pair of diamond hoops (at 50% off) that might not have you singing like Jennifer Hudson, but you will definitely sparkle just as bright.

Elizabeth Taylor‘s passing is top news today, and here at Portero we’re sad not only for the death of a great actress and activist, but one of the world’s foremost jewelry connoisseurs. Her book, “My Love Affair With Jewelry,” is one of my all-time favorite compilations on the subject. The coffee table tome talks in-depth about the pieces her stunning collection, but also about the stories behind the jewels. If you’re a fan of all that glitters, I highly recommend making the purchase.
Elizabeth was a fan of jewelry throughout her entire life, as evidenced by pictures of her wearing multiple pieces at once at events, on vacation, and in her films. Cleopatra is a must-see, if not for the romance between she and Richard Burton that took place during filming, then for the spectacular costumes and jewels that are worn throughout. She owned some of the most unbelievable gems on earth, including the Krupp Diamond, La Peregrina (pearl) and the Taylor-Burton diamond, so named after it was purchased for her.
So, in tribute to Ms. Taylor, here is the legend wearing just a few of her prized gems.
“My mother says I didn’t open my eyes for eight days after I was born, but when I did, the first thing I saw was an engagement ring. I was hooked.”

I think Mandy Moore looks adorable here promoting her new Disney movie Tangled. Her sweet Paule Ka LBD only needs two strong accessories–fabulous red satin heels and a multi-strand pearl and diamond necklace (that I’m assuming is vintage). Some people might look at this necklace and think ‘old’, but Mandy did it just right. Her not-too-perfect topknot is just the right hair for her age, and she wisely stays minimal on the makeup and other jewelry.

Lately all the young starlets have been taking to the red carpet in peek-a-boo black lace dresses. Just in the past couple of weeks, Emma Watson stepped out in Rafael Lopez, Taylor Swift chose Jenny Packham and Kirsten Dunst wore just-off-the-runway Valentino. It’s interesting to see just how different these similar fabrics can look—Emma is sexy and sassy, Taylor is black-tie-ready, and Kirsten’s choice could go from day to night.
One thing that could tie all of these dresses together? A great pair of diamond earrings. Since lace is so intricate, I would choose a retro button or vintage style that doesn’t take away from the details of the dress. Check out our favorites below:

September 24, 2009 was a lucky day in the South African Petra Diamond Cullinan mine when a 507.55 carat rough diamond (above) was found among the rubble. The huge stone–extremely rare and apparently of exceptional color and quality–is one of the top 20 largest high-quality rough diamonds ever found. Amazingly, three other very large rough diamonds were found in the same run at sizes of 168, 58.5 and 53.3 carats each.
I particularly love stories about Cullinan because I was lucky enough to visit the mine as part of a press trip several years ago. It’s amazing to see the vast amounts of land and resources used to unearth these relatively tiny gems.
