A French Connection; French Fashion Designers

What is it about the French that exemplifies elegance and sophistication? Is it something in the water, or the eau, is it the French air that makes French designers so effortlessly chic? French design is instantly recognizable by the clean silhouettes, and minimalist approach. The French truly believe that “Less is More,” after all, it was Mademoiselle Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel who first said “Before you go out, always take something off.” Get to know our Top 5 French Fashion Designers and maisons (in alphabetical order).

1. Cartier

CartierPre-owned Cartier Small Tank Francaise Watch $2,460. Cartier Ballon Bleu Watch with Diamonds $49,500.  Pre-owned Cartier Pasha C Watch $3,700. Pre-Owned Cartier Trinity Ring $8,200.

The “Jeweler to Kings and King of Jewelers,” Cartier was founded  in 1847, when Louis-François Cartier inherited a jewelry workshop in Paris from his master. However, it was his grandsons, Louis, Pierre, and Jacques, who are responsible for making Cartier a world-renowned brand. In 1904, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend, Louis Cartier, how unreliable pocket watches were when flying. And so, Cartier designed a flat watch that could be worn around the wrist, with a distinctive square bezel, and Cartier’s first men’s wristwatch was born: The “Santos.”

Cartier timepieces are the pure definition of sophistication. From the sleek elegant lines of a Cartier Tank to the masculine details on the Cartier Roadster, each Cartier watch model is a true classic.

In addition to creating iconic timepieces, Cartier has created some of the most coveted jewelry of all time, including the iconic LOVE collection.

2. Chanel

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel had a very humble start in life, but now she is one of the most important people in the history of fashion. She began her business in 1909, when she opened a hat shop in Paris, which was very popular among ladies of society. A year later, she opened a bigger hat shop at 31 Rue Cambon, and two years later, Coco was selling pret-a-porter women’s clothes. Tired of the unnatural and uncomfortable fashion of the time, mademoiselle Chanel introduced a revolutionary line of clothing made out of jersey and other comfortable materials, that allowed women ease of movement.

Chanel further liberated women’s hands by creating the first bag with long straps, for toting leisure, when she created the Flap bag, one of the most recognizable handbags in the world. Today, the Chanel maison thrives under the direction of Karl Lageferld, continuing to surprise its devotees season after season, but while still keeping the elegance and sophistication first envisioned by Mademoiselle Chanel.

For the Love of Cartier; the Story Behind the LOVE Collection

Cartier Love Bracelet and Birkin bag

The LΘVE bracelet was designed by Cartier’s Aldo Cipullo in 1969. He was inspired by the chastity belts worn by women during Medieval times, to protect their virtue and good name.

Similar to a chastity belt, the bracelet locks around the wrist, and can only be removed with a special screwdriver. For a while, Cartier had a policy that no customer could buy a LOVE bracelet for himself or herself – they had to buy it as part of a couple. During the 70s, his-and-hers bracelets were presented to famous couples, like The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Many celebrities were photographed wearing the sleek gold band. The LOVE bracelet became an instant hit.

The original LOVE bracelets were gold plated, but as time went on and demand grew, they started creating solid gold bracelets, and in 1979, a diamond-studded version was introduced. Today, Cartier continues to produce this iconic symbol of love, not only in the form of the original bracelet, but also in rings, cuff links, and earrings. Some bracelets don’t even require a screwdriver, but still have the emblematic LΘVE design.

“The Cartier LOVE series represents the permanence and indestructibility of affection,” says PORTERO‘s Creative Director, Nick Marmol. ” Classic and timeless, it is given as a gift for only the most important occasions.”

Although it was first introduced as a symbol of love, today it can be gifted for many reasons: coming-of-age, graduation, or even as a gift to yourself. The LOVE bracelet’s design is recognizable enough to be considered a modern icon, but simple enough to complement all outfits. It can easily be worn on its own, or stacked with bracelets and/or watches. It looks just as appropriate with jeans and a t-shirt, than it does with a designer gown. Its unisex design makes it the ultimate sign of elegance and sophistication.

It’s been more than 40 years since its introduction, but the Cartier LOVE bracelet has remained relevant in the luxury and secondary luxury market. In fact, Cartier is one of the five brands that will hold its value over time. Today, a LOVE bracelet starts at $6,300 and goes to $56,500 for a white gold and diamonds piece. However, at PORTERO you can find Cartier LOVE pieces for about $5,000.

“Love has become too commercial, yet life without love is nothing – a fat zero.” Said Cipullo. “What modern people want are love symbols that look semi-permanent – or, at least, require a trick to remove. After all, love symbols should suggest an everlasting quality.”

The Five Brands with Staying Power in the Secondary Luxury Market

Here at PORTERO we don’t want to just help you find the best luxury items, but we want to educate you on the secondary market, on what makes a great purchase, and which luxury accessories will hold their value over time.

“The secondary marketplace is very much like a commodity. Brands and their collections gain and lose value based on specific factors,” says Alexis Clarbour, the director of For example, you may pay full retail price on a certain bag, only to sell it a few years later and find out it has lost more than half of its retail value. The demand for certain brands and items varies over time, but there are five brands that have staying power in the secondary luxury market; meaning they are always in demand, and, should you wish to resell your items, will always get you a good profit.

Brands with Staying Power

  1. Bulgari. We have noticed an increase of interest in Bulgari, especially the Serpenti and Tubogas collections. The brand is also known for their colored gemstones, like these 18K yellow gold and pink tourmaline earrings.
  2. Cartier. Cartier is known for its fine jewelry and watches. The Cartier LOVE Bracelet, an iconic symbol of love, is a highly coveted piece that is in huge demand in the secondary market.
  3. Rolex. One of the brand’s most popular model; the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, is one of the most sought after timepieces by luxury watch lovers. It’s a great collector’s item that will undoubtedly hold its value over time.
  4. Chanel. As Chanel retail prices continue to rise, Chanel handbags and accessories, like this still Chanel Classic Double Flap Bag, can be found at excellent price points in the secondary marketplace.
  5. Birkin bag. It’s very hard to purchase a Birkin bag directly from Hermès, due to the high demand and low supply. However, you can find many Birkin bags in the secondary marketplace (here at PORTERO we have more than one hundred), which you can buy immediately; without having to get on a wait list. “If [a Birkin bag] is in excellent or pristine condition…one can receive a high premium to retail for that bag,” says our director, Alexis Clarbour. Grammy Glamour

Alright, I’m just going to say it: I found the Grammys kind of fun last night. Even though the winners were completely predicted by the performance right before, and even though Rihanna looks good but can’t really sing live, there were still some surprises and some great clothes. Unlike the super safe movie awards gowns, the Grammys give celebs a chance to get sassy and show their personalities. Case in point: Jennifer Hudson in Versace, Neil Lane Jewels and Christian Louboutin shoes. By far my favorite of the night, she had just the right amount of shimmer, sex appeal and class to feel rock and roll without going overboard.

Jennifer Lopez went for ultra silver shimmer in her Pucci mini, Cartier jewels, Swarovski clutch and Louboutins, but it works. She followed the rule of short skirt, long sleeves, and went minimal on the hair and makeup. The Grammys are really all about the sequin, so JLo knew that to make a statement, she’d have to rock the look from head to toe.

My final favorite was Lea Michele, also opting for Pucci. But her dress couldn’t be more different than JLo’s – instead of sparkle, she chose a plunging neckline with lace inserts and a sky-high slit. The hot pink lips and Lorraine Schwartz bracelet were the perfect additions to a slinky, sultry ensemble.

If you want to get your own red carpet rock and roll look, a silver clutch will never do you wrong. Here are some of our favorites:

Dapper Dials

Zac Efron might still be working on being taken seriously as a leading man, but he is definitely is emerging as a style icon for men. Whether or not you’re a fan of the beard, you can’t deny that his gray suit and Cartier Calibre watch look pretty dapper.

There’s a lot to like about this watch, but I’m particularly fond of the oversized black dial and the sophisticated (but unusual) Ruman Numeral markers. Like the look of a black dial? Here are some of our favorites:

Chronoswiss Kairos SS Automatic

White Hot Watches

The Chanel J12 was one of the most-wanted watches a couple of years ago. Tons of celebrities have been spotted wearing the white version (like Ashley Tisdale, above) in ultra-cool ceramic. Even if you’re not into the oversized Chanel version, there’s other ways to wear white that can even be understated. Here are my three favorites that are perfect for a summer timepiece:

Cartier Santos 100 Stainless Steel automatic watch. I love the white leather strap paired with the industrial-looking square face.

Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Stainless Steel and Diamond automatic watch. This throwback watch is meant to reference Art Deco, and the great patent leather strap and diamonds are perfect feminine touches.

Audemars Piguet Facettes 18-karat gold and diamond watch. Tons of diamonds and a white lizard strap? Definitely a girl’s best friend.

The Annenberg Diamond

Good news on the auction front: several major jewels recently sold at prices far above their estimates. This is exciting on a couple of levels: First, it means the economy is starting to recover, which is a good thing for everyone. Second, it just shows you that certain brands and classic style never really lose its value.

Point in case: The Annenberg diamond (above), a 32.01-carat D-flawless stone mounted in a ring by Manhattan jeweler David Webb, sold for $7.7 million at Christie’s, much higher than the $3 million to $5 million pre-sale estimate.

Another high point was a diamond and rock crystal bow brooch by Cartier estimated at $200,000 – $300,000 that sold for $1.1 million. These buyers obviously know that if you invest in time-honored brands and spectacular gemstones, there’s an inherent value that will never go away.
