Flowers in Spring; the Coco Chanel Flower

Coco Chanel Camellia

Chanel lovers are familiar with the camellia, the Coco Chanel Flower; a motif we see over and over again in the maison’s design – an emblem of House Chanel. Camellias originate in eastern and southeast Asia and are most revered in that region. For instance, in Korea, they are a symbol of longevity and faithfulness, making them a popular choice at weddings. In the West, they have come to symbolize desire, passion, and refinement. The camellia has inspired many artists, like…

Straw bags- the new IT bags for the summer?

Sure, Hermès has a bag named after Jane Birkin, but for much of the 70’s her bag of choice was a modest straw bag; a wicker basket, to be more precise. Here at PORTERO we are adoring the 70’s chic feel have less humble options with the same boho feel. Inspired by our recent mention on phillymag.com, we’ve complied a collection of straw bags to give you that same Jane Birkin boho feel for summer. 1. Rare Chanel Basket Case Crossbody Bag…

Vintage Trunks as Home Decor?

click to enlarge! One of my favorite decor and design blogs, Design*Sponge, had a great post today about using vintage trunks and luggage in the home. Not only are old trunks beautiful, but they are also extremely practical as storage or side tables. Classic monogram Louis Vuitton, like in the image above, matches nearly any color scheme, but Goyard is another great choice if you want to incorporate a pop of color. Definitely click through to the post to get tons…

Colorblocking: How to Mix and Match in Style

(click to enlarge!) When the Fall 2011 runway shows hit NY, London and Paris last spring, it was clear that designers had color on the brain. But, instead of brash patterns or florals, they were thinking dense blocks of saturated color paired for dramatic effect. Gucci, specifically, didn’t shy away from multiple colors in one outfit: a green pant, purple top and orange jacket suddenly seemed fresh and sophisticated when married. Now that Fall is finally upon us, it’s time…

Alison M. Won Chanel!

We’d love for you to meet the winner of our Portero Luxury/Refinery29 sweepstakes, Alison M. from San Francisco! Although she had no idea what she won initially (don’t forget, this was a “secret” sweeps), Alison fell in love with the bag immediately. Here’s what she told us via email: “I got the handbag today; it’s so classy! The strange thing is that I had deja vu when I saw it, like I owned it before. It’s lovely!” Alison, we totally agree! The…

Only in Vegas

Although I was technically in Vegas for Jewelry Market Week, I couldn’t pass up stopping by the Wynn hotel’s Chanel shop. In my experience, the Vegas locations seem to always get some great, limited-edition, unusual items that you just can’t find anywhere else. Case-in-point? The gorgeous matte blue stingray reissue with inlaid crystals you see above. According to my helpful sales associate, this was one of two produced for the United States. And it was $16,000. So although I couldn’t…

Jewelry Show Mania!

I just returned from “Jewelry Market Week”, a slew of shows in Las Vegas representing the industry I’ve worked in for the last decade. I spent most of my time at the Couture show, a gorgeous, invitation-only event that showcases some of the biggest names in the biz as well as up-and-comers with serious design chops. One of my favorite booths was Irene Neuwirth, a California-based designer who truly appreciates the beauty of colored gems. Her signature is using large,…

Chanel Resort: Now with Diamonds!

While I wasn’t in love with everything in Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel 2012 Resort show, I did find something that made me personally happy: the jewels! Karl brought on the bling, all from Chanel’s haute jewelry collection, and accessorized everything from turbans to maillots. While the ensemble above may seem impractical to some, it just screamed summer on the Riviera to me (in a great way). I love the peek of a diamond statement necklace under an outfit totally reminiscent of…
