Louis Vuitton Patina

Fresh Louis Vuitton Patina

Every luxury bag has a different aging process. Just like a good pair of jeans, good leather will get better with age, as it molds to your lifestyle. Louis Vuitton bags are not an exception. Some LV bags have vachetta leather (also known as cowhide), which is an untreated leather that is very susceptible to water, stains, and even sunlight. Louis Vuitton uses it a lot in their monogram collection for trimming and handles. When an LV bag is brand new, vachetta leather will be a very pale shade of beige, as seen above in this Louis Vuitton Vernis Brea MM Amarante bag.

However, since this leather is untreated and raw, over time, it will start to darken, in a process called “Patina.” Besides the elements, like air and water, sweat and oil from the hands are also responsible for patina, and  because of this, it’s possible that some parts of the handle will be darker than the rest. Patina is probably the easiest and fastest way to tell if a Louis Vuitton monogram bag is authentic. LV replicas are usually made of a plastic that will not patina over time. Real Louis Vuitton monogram bag handles and trims will develop a beautiful honey color over time.

Some people hate watching the patina process, because they feel guilty every time they touch their bags. Instead they rather buy vintage Louis Vuitton bags that have already developed the beautiful honey brown color, so they don’t have to see the cowhide leather darken. Over time, patina will actually protect your bag from dirt, water stain, and other elements.

There are a few ways to speed up, as well as slow down, the patina process. However, we believe it’s best to let nature take its course, and allow patina to develop naturally.

Some love patina, and some hate it and avoid it at all costs, but no matter what side you’re on, there’s no denying patina gives your handbag personality- no two patinas are ever alike. So whether you prefer pristine Louis Vuitton or vintage, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect luxury bag to fit your needs on

A French Connection; French Fashion Designers

What is it about the French that exemplifies elegance and sophistication? Is it something in the water, or the eau, is it the French air that makes French designers so effortlessly chic? French design is instantly recognizable by the clean silhouettes, and minimalist approach. The French truly believe that “Less is More,” after all, it was Mademoiselle Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel who first said “Before you go out, always take something off.” Get to know our Top 5 French Fashion Designers and maisons (in alphabetical order).

The “Jeweler to Kings and King of Jewelers,” Cartier was founded  in 1847, when Louis-François Cartier inherited a jewelry workshop in Paris from his master. However, it was his grandsons, Louis, Pierre, and Jacques, who are responsible for making Cartier a world-renowned brand. In 1904, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend, Louis Cartier, how unreliable pocket watches were when flying. And so, Cartier designed a flat watch that could be worn around the wrist, with a distinctive square bezel, and Cartier’s first men’s wristwatch was born: The “Santos.”

Cartier timepieces are the pure definition of sophistication. From the sleek elegant lines of a Cartier Tank to the masculine details on the Cartier Roadster, each Cartier watch model is a true classic.

In addition to creating iconic timepieces, Cartier has created some of the most coveted jewelry of all time, including the iconic LOVE collection.

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel had a very humble start in life, but now she is one of the most important people in the history of fashion. She began her business in 1909, when she opened a hat shop in Paris, which was very popular among ladies of society. A year later, she opened a bigger hat shop at 31 Rue Cambon, and two years later, Coco was selling pret-a-porter women’s clothes. Tired of the unnatural and uncomfortable fashion of the time, mademoiselle Chanel introduced a revolutionary line of clothing made out of jersey and other comfortable materials, that allowed women ease of movement.

Chanel further liberated women’s hands by creating the first bag with long straps, for toting leisure, when she created the Flap bag, one of the most recognizable handbags in the world. Today, the Chanel maison thrives under the direction of Karl Lageferld, continuing to surprise its devotees season after season, but while still keeping the elegance and sophistication first envisioned by Mademoiselle Chanel.

Iconic Louis Vuitton handbags

Top 5 Most Iconic Louis Vuitton Handbags

We have previously discussed what makes a bag iconic, but every brand has their own bags that are immediately recognizable. In the case of Louis Vuitton, it’s safe to say that most people in the world, whether they’re handbag lovers or not, can identify the iconic monogram logo, and these five styles:

1. The Keepall

Louis Vuitton monogram Keepall available on PORTERO.comLouis Vuitton Keepall 50 $620

Louis Vuitton started his career by making travel trunks and bags. Designed by Georges Vuitton, Louis’ son, The Keepall made its debut in the early 1930s. The Keepall’s design features have influenced today’s modern weekend bags, also known as weekender bags. Its style makes it the perfect unisex bag- a travel bag both men and women, who love luxury can enjoy. Because of its size (45, 50, 55, and 60) the Keepall is the perfect airplane carry on.

2. The Speedy

Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 with graffiti Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 Green Graffiti Monogram $1,860

The Speedy’s rich history began in the 1930s, when Louis Vuitton decided to make a more practical, smaller version of the Keepall for every day wear, making it the very first handbags design of the French maison. The original Speedy measured 30 centimeters, but as a special request from a big fan, Audrey Hepburn, the Speedy 25 was born in the 1940s.

When it comes to luxury handbags, the Speedy is one of the most affordable out there, with retail prices starting at $950 for the smallest Speedy 25. At PORTERO, you can find great deals on Speedys, with prices starting at $350.

The Louis Vuitton Speedy comes in four sizes: Speedy 25, Speedy 30, Speedy 25, and Speedy 40. The number is the length of the bag in centimeters.

The Speedy has gotten plenty of makeovers over the years from collaborating designers, like Stephen Sprouse and Yayoi Kusama. However, the original monogram and damier canvas Speedy stands the test of time. 80+ years and counting.

Vintage Trunks as Home Decor?

One of my favorite decor and design blogs, Design*Sponge, had a great post today about using vintage trunks and luggage in the home. Not only are old trunks beautiful, but they are also extremely practical as storage or side tables. Classic monogram Louis Vuitton, like in the image above, matches nearly any color scheme, but Goyard is another great choice if you want to incorporate a pop of color.

Definitely click through to the post to get tons of inspiration. Is this a look you would ever try in your own home?

Suit Up

Last week when I was in Las Vegas, one of my most complimented outfits was a white linen pantsuit a la Bianca Jagger in the 1970s. While menswear is a trend that circles back often, I’ve been seeing some great examples of the evening tux lately that make me want to put the LBD aside in favor of the Little Black Suit. Take, for instance, Hailee Steinfeld at the MTV Movie Awards last week. I am smitten with her Louis Vuitton tuxedo paired with an emerald green and black mica striped clutch by Edie Parker. So chic, and yet she makes it perfectly age-appropriate by wearing her hair loose and donning a simple white t-shirt.

Get Hailee’s look with this DEVI KROELL Swarovski Wooden Clutch or this GUCCI Parrot Green Snakeskin Clutch. The pop of bright color adds jus the right touch to a mature outfit.

I also liked the stark simplicity of Kirsten Dunst in Patrick Ervell at the CFDA Awards in New York City. While it’s very buttoned up, the contrasting blue lapel and oversized hoop earrings give it a polished edge. Make this look your own with these DAVID ALAN 18K Yellow & Diamond Gold Hoop Earrings or go for all-out glam with these 18k White gold & Diamond Hoop Earrings.
