Today would have been Louis Vuitton’s birthday. In his honor, we’re taking a look at the recently retired (as of July 31st) Louis Vuitton + Takashi Murakami collaboration. Although you may not be familiar with the Murakami name, you are surely familiar with his colorful work through the Louis Vuiton Multicolore monogram.

In 2002 when, Louis Vuitton Creative Director, Marc Jacobs, decided that the iconic French luxury brand needed a new twist; something fresh to celebrate the still-young new millennium. And so, he teamed up with Japanese artist, Takashi Murakami, to reinvent the classic monogram print.

The Multicolore Monogram was first unveiled in the Spring/Summer 2003 Louis Vuitton runway, and it was an instant success, since it has been carried by celebrities and fashionistas everywhere. The Multicolore offered a fun kwaii twist to the traditional monogram, showcasing Murakami’s Tokyo style.

Bags and accessories in the Multicolore collection will soon become collectors’ items, so be sure to get your hands on Multicolor accessories before prices start going up! Visit our dedicated Takashi Murakami for Louis Vuitton page to see all of our items.

Top 5 Most Iconic Louis Vuitton Handbags

We have previously discussed what makes a bag iconic, but every brand has their own bags that are immediately recognizable. In the case of Louis Vuitton, it’s safe to say that most people in the world, whether they’re handbag lovers or not, can identify the iconic monogram logo, and these five styles:

1. The Keepall

Louis Vuitton monogram Keepall available on PORTERO.comLouis Vuitton Keepall 50 $620

Louis Vuitton started his career by making travel trunks and bags. Designed by Georges Vuitton, Louis’ son, The Keepall made its debut in the early 1930s. The Keepall’s design features have influenced today’s modern weekend bags, also known as weekender bags. Its style makes it the perfect unisex bag- a travel bag both men and women, who love luxury can enjoy. Because of its size (45, 50, 55, and 60) the Keepall is the perfect airplane carry on.

2. The Speedy

Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 with graffiti Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 Green Graffiti Monogram $1,860

The Speedy’s rich history began in the 1930s, when Louis Vuitton decided to make a more practical, smaller version of the Keepall for every day wear, making it the very first handbags design of the French maison. The original Speedy measured 30 centimeters, but as a special request from a big fan, Audrey Hepburn, the Speedy 25 was born in the 1940s.

When it comes to luxury handbags, the Speedy is one of the most affordable out there, with retail prices starting at $950 for the smallest Speedy 25. At PORTERO, you can find great deals on Speedys, with prices starting at $350.

The Louis Vuitton Speedy comes in four sizes: Speedy 25, Speedy 30, Speedy 25, and Speedy 40. The number is the length of the bag in centimeters.

The Speedy has gotten plenty of makeovers over the years from collaborating designers, like Stephen Sprouse and Yayoi Kusama. However, the original monogram and damier canvas Speedy stands the test of time. 80+ years and counting.

Vintage Trunks as Home Decor?

One of my favorite decor and design blogs, Design*Sponge, had a great post today about using vintage trunks and luggage in the home. Not only are old trunks beautiful, but they are also extremely practical as storage or side tables. Classic monogram Louis Vuitton, like in the image above, matches nearly any color scheme, but Goyard is another great choice if you want to incorporate a pop of color.

Definitely click through to the post to get tons of inspiration. Is this a look you would ever try in your own home?

Suit Up

Last week when I was in Las Vegas, one of my most complimented outfits was a white linen pantsuit a la Bianca Jagger in the 1970s. While menswear is a trend that circles back often, I’ve been seeing some great examples of the evening tux lately that make me want to put the LBD aside in favor of the Little Black Suit. Take, for instance, Hailee Steinfeld at the MTV Movie Awards last week. I am smitten with her Louis Vuitton tuxedo paired with an emerald green and black mica striped clutch by Edie Parker. So chic, and yet she makes it perfectly age-appropriate by wearing her hair loose and donning a simple white t-shirt.

Get Hailee’s look with this DEVI KROELL Swarovski Wooden Clutch or this GUCCI Parrot Green Snakeskin Clutch. The pop of bright color adds jus the right touch to a mature outfit.

I also liked the stark simplicity of Kirsten Dunst in Patrick Ervell at the CFDA Awards in New York City. While it’s very buttoned up, the contrasting blue lapel and oversized hoop earrings give it a polished edge. Make this look your own with these DAVID ALAN 18K Yellow & Diamond Gold Hoop Earrings or go for all-out glam with these 18k White gold & Diamond Hoop Earrings.

Fall Must-Have: Bright Bags

While bopping around the web today, I came across a slideshow with a list of the 10 must-have trends for fall. Number six has really been on my radar recently, so I thought I’d spotlight some of my favorite bright bags (at great values). I recently purchased a Louis Vuitton epi crossbody bag in a bright green, so I’m not just preaching — I’m actually already on board!

Travel in Style

Just came across this interesting post on Apartment Therapy that talks a bit about the history of the travel trunk, particularly by Louis Vuitton. Although these heavy duty pieces of luggage were created for completely practical purposes, they are now often used strictly as home decor.

Would you use a vintage Louis Vuitton trunk as a coffee table? Here are a couple to ponder:
